From July through October, the ancient Roman city of Arles transforms into a photography scavenger hunt of sorts as it welcomes Les Recontres d’Arles photography festival. Exhibits are sprinkled all over the city, from churches and museums to libraries and even a Monoprix, the latter of which perfectly encapsulates the festival’s playful, anything-goes spirit and is well-worth interrupting your grocery shopping for. We visited right after opening, and while you can’t really go wrong, these were some of our favorite shows:

- Animal Model
- GHANA! Dreaming Independence 1957–1976
- We Are Not Alone: Alien Images
- Honorable Mention: Casa Ideale. While not officially part of Les Rencontres, this ephemeral gallery and villa is a must-visit cultural experience this season. Book a tour to view Carla Sozzani’s personal collection, book the villa to have the entire 1970s modernist masterpiece to yourself, or book just one room when it’s operating as a hotel for one week at the end of August.

We can attest that Cremer—the new opening in London on everyone’s wishlist—lives up to the hype. Opened by the team behind Space Talk and designed by Gennaro Leone of Spazio Leone, Cremer is the sort of cafe you’ll want to spend the whole day at. The decor is lived-in and filled with intrigue, and the space is much bigger than you’d expect—it’s divided into a cafe, a canteen, and an outdoor patio. Beyond the pastries (all baked in-house and—unsurprisingly—excellent, given that the baker comes from Rose Bakery), the changing lunch menu is simple and delicious. We had preserved aubergine and courgette, a big green salad dressed with a mustard vinaigrette, and a pork sandwich packed with herbs. Go for lunch and stay a bit longer, but be prepared for a crowd (it’s a hot opening).
We just got back from a blissful stay at Spina, a haven tucked into the rugged cliffside of Folegandros. Run by a close-knit team from Modena, the osteria and five suites, each named after a natural element, were built into the land and designed as a boat. The osteria serves a tasting menu of creative Italian and Greek dishes, and a private path leads down to the secluded, protected Ambeli Bay. All hours here are idyllic, but particularly in the morning: a dip in the calm, crystal-clear water (that feels more like a pool) then breakfast of eggs any style, Greek yogurt with fruit and nuts grown on the property, fresh-squeezed juice from the garden, and strong espresso. Spina is a pocket of laidback, unhurried luxury—a rare kind of hospitality that ushers in connection to the land, the sea, and the sun. We can't wait to go back.
