The capital of Mexico is a thriving metropolis and a great place to visit year-round. Because of Mexico City's huge size (and bad traffic), it's impossible to see the whole city in a few days, so you can visit several times and always try something new. The culinary and design scenes are some of the best in the world.

Cariñito Tacos

Hipster-approved street side taco spot in Roma serving Asian-inspired tacos (think Cantonese pork belly with pickled cucumbers, hoisin sauce and homemade sriracha). Wash them down with a beer or natural wine. 

Casa Gilardi

The last house Luis Barragán designed in CDMX, and one of his best. Make a reservation in advance for a tour led by his family members, who still live at the house. In typical Barragán fashion, the house makes beautiful use of color and light. Swing by Mari Gold for brunch before or after a tour. 

Chic By Accident

Architecture and design studio in Roma with stunning decor finds. A great stop for those interested in design, even if you aren’t buying anything. It’s tucked discretely on the second floor of an apartment building. 

Churrería El Moro Centro

El Moro has the best churros in CDMX (and ice cream sandwiches made with churros). This is the original location and it's open 24/7.

Contramar

Lunch at Contramar is an absolute must in Mexico City. The restaurant is one of the city's most famous restaurants, and the perfect place for a long, fun lunch of delicious seafood—the tuna tostadas and fig tart are must-orders. Reserve far in advance.

Cuadra San Cristobal Los Clubes Luis Barragán

Luis Barragán’s horse ranch and stables, about a 40-minute drive from the city center. It’s one of Barragán’s largest and most impressive works, and a great spot for snapping photos. Advance reservations needed.

Esquina Común

What started as a lunch-only pop-up in an apartment is now a full-fledged restaurant—but reservations can still only be made via Instagram DM. Helmed by Mexican chef Ana Dolores, this exclusive address is only open on weekends, when it serves six-course set menus on a Condesa rooftop. 

Frida Kahlo Museum

Also known as the Blue House, Frida Kahlo's former home—she was born here and stayed until her death in 1954—is one of CDMX's true must-visit attractions, you simply cannot visit the city without coming here. The house is pretty much as she left it when she passed away, and it contains lots of her personal belongings as well as a few of her paintings. Reserve far in advance and know that depending on traffic, it can take 45 minutes to get here.

Hugo

The best wine bar in CDMX, known for a cool crowd, laid-back vibe and French small plates (gnocchi Parisienne, steak tartare, radicchio salad). In addition to natural wine, it also has great cocktails, including an excellent martini. If going for a date, try to snag the window seats. This is also a great option for a Sunday dinner, when most of the best restaurants are closed. 

La Condesa

This trendy neighborhood has a great atmosphere and tons of charming restaurants and boutiques. The main street is Calle Colima. For a quick bite, try Molino El Pujol, the casual offshoot of the famous Pujol restaurant.

Mari Gold

With hip-hop playing in the background, a natural wine list, and one of the most inventive menus in the city–focused on Mexican-Indian-African fare—this is one of the coolest spots to go for lunch. Don't miss the suadero samosas.

Maximo

Amazing neighborhood restaurant in Roma that's revered for its farm-to-table, French-inspired Mexican cuisine. It's perfect for lunch or dinner.

Museo Casa Estudio Diego Rivera y Frida Kahlo

This spectacular attraction was designed by Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera's friend, architect Juan O'Gorman, and the couple’s former home. The structure is actually two separate homes, that are linked by an elevated walkway. Have lunch at San Ángel Inn after (and don’t miss the tableside margs). 

National Palace

Located on the Zócalo (the main square in central CDMX), this is a government building but it is a top attraction because it is home to Deigo Rivera's famous "The History of Mexico" mural. The massive, colorful work depicts Mexican history over centuries. It's remarkable.

Panadería Rosetta

This bakery from the team behind the best Italian restaurant in Mexico City, Rosetta, serves perfect baked goods—the guava danish is legendary, and the chocolate croissant is also amazing. The line gets crazy, so try to go early, or prepare for a long wait.

Roma Norte

This super atmospheric neighborhood has great shopping and dining and a creative vibe. Don't lunch or dinner at Rosetta, or its famous bakery, Panaderia Rosetta, to try the famous guava danish.

Salón Rosetta

The gorgeous Rosetta, located in a restored mansion in Roma, serves amazing Italian food, and it's great for lunch or a romantic dinner. The breads, which come from the restaurant's next-door bakery, Panadería Rosetta, and homemade pastas are phenomenal. Don't miss Salón Rosetta, the third-floor cocktail bar.

Sandra Weil

Peruvian Sandra Weil is one of Latin America's most successful fashion designers, and her Polanco flagship is the top spot for expertly tailored womenswear. Her styles send to be flowy and feminine, and she also does custom pieces.

Taquería Orinoco

One of the most beloved taquerias in CDMX. Ultra-casual, with a retro vibe, this is the place to try chicharrón and tacos al pastor. There are a few locations throughout the city. 

Teotihuacán

About an hour-and-an-half by car from CDMX, this ancient city is a must for anyone interested in history. The centuries-old pyramids here have been very well preserved and you can climb the ruins (note that it can be very crowded and hot here—there is little shade). Splurge on a guide to get a better understanding of the mysterious site.

Ticuchi

This super atmospheric, Enrique Olvera-run mezcal bar occupies the old Pujol space in Polanco and offers great cocktails and a menu of mostly vegetarian snacks.
